Engineer Blog

Meet Eddie, one of our engineers.

“I have been involved in vehicle electrics and technology all of my working life and can honestly say that I never wake up dreading going to work.  Every day is different when you work for a company which you respect and shares the same values, like great customer service and a genuine desire to continually improve every aspect of the business. When you’ve got that, you can approach every day with confidence.

I have worked for a number of companies over the years as well as a lot of time working for myself, and I would say that working for Contel is as close to working for yourself (the good bits) as is possible whilst being employed. The one thing that is immediately obvious with Contel is the company’s genuine concern that all employees are taking care of their mental and physical health.

The job of an engineer itself is, in my opinion, a very underrated cog in a company’s offering and as we are customer-facing it is vital that we build a relationship with the customer and also the drivers.

I never view the installation or servicing of our systems as just a job, which I need to get through as quickly as possible but approach it as an opportunity to improve on the quality of what I produce. Cheesy, but true.

My day starts with a 5 am alarm (working or not) as this gives me some quiet time to get set for the day – I make a flask of tea and depending on where I am working, I am often out of the door by 05:30 (I prefer to start early and finish early where I can).

I enjoy the drive to a customer site and I listen to a variety of different things on the way there. How I’m feeling, the weather or just the day of the week determines what I’m listening to!

As an example, if there has been any football the night before then I would generally listen to Talk Sport. Other than that, I like to listen to Chris Evans on Virgin Radio, where there is decent music, but also the chat is also very geared toward health and well-being (physical and mental). Long drives are often spent listening to Podcasts and currently, these would be either Simon Sinek or as I have just bought an e-bike I like listening to Bikepacking talks.

When I am working, I have a real eclectic taste in music. This could be anything from Harry Connick Junior to Drum and Base. Today as it was lashing down in South Wales, I had Florence and the Machine on full blast through my headphones and this certainly brightened the mood on a gloomy day.

My downtime is spent either with the family or Saturdays out on the Bike and Sunday morning running with a pal of mine.”
